This Bird Must Fly the Coop!

     Please select the correct definition of round robin.

  1. Member of the thrush family marked by its reddish-orange breast and rotund body structure
  2. Reading activity during which each student orally reads a segment of a shared text, one student after another, while other students follow along
  3. Sports tournament in which each contestant is matched in turn against every other contestant
  4. All of the above

Although the correct answer is #4, it’s bad news that #2 is even a choice! Round Robin Reading (RRR), Popcorn Reading, and the like, are not supported by literacy research and can actually be detrimental because they:

  • present an inaccurate model of reading;
  • can lead to ineffective reading habits;
  • can trigger anxiety, embarrassment, and inattention; and
  • rob students of valuable reading instruction time.

Please do your part to make this bird extinct by replacing RRR with literacy best practices, including:

  • choral reading,
  • teacher read-aloud,
  • shared reading,
  • fluency activities,
  • guided reading, and
  • buddy reading.

Eliminating RRR doesn’t mean students will never read aloud. There is a time and place for this strategy using repeated readings of independent and instructional level texts to help students prepare to eventually read aloud.
